Choosing Your Wedding Ceremony Music | Williamsburg Wedding Photographer

Ah, music. Such a powerful thing. Have you ever heard a song and immediately been transported back to a different place and time? Your wedding ceremony music can be that powerful. After over 200 weddings I can still get teary-eyed hearing the first few notes of Pachelbel’s Canon in D played on violin.

When it comes time for you to choose your ceremony music – these are just a few of the things you’ll want to think about.

Understand the Basics

Depending on the formality of your ceremony you’ll probably have more than one song. Traditional Knoxville weddings can include up to five songs: Prelude (what is playing when the guests arrive and are seated), Processional for the wedding party, Processional for the bride, Interlude (this is where having a talented guest or family member sing or play would work well), Recessional (after you’re married), and Postlude (any music playing while guests are still at the ceremony after it’s over).

Set the Pace

The tempo of your song sets the pace for how quickly you and your wedding party will process down the aisle. So when you’re choosing your song, be sure to practice walking to it making sure it’s a comfortable speed. Keep in mind you’ll be wearing a beautifully detailed wedding gown, you’ll want to give people time to notice! Consider songs like: “Appalachian Spring” by Aaron Copeland performed by New York Philharmonic, Arioso by Bach, “Dawn” by Jean-Yves Thibaudet, or “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole.

Think About the Venue

Check with your venue to see what the rules are, but if you are having a large outdoor ceremony you will want to consider  amplifying the music, if you’re in a Nashville church – check to see what kind of instrumentalists or variety of music they allow.

Be True to You

Not particularly sentimental? It’s not irreverent these days to choose something upbeat and fun to announce your arrival!

Listen to your Heart

After you have a short list of songs, get in a comfortable place, close your eyes and imagine yourself walking down the aisle to meet the love of your life. Your heart will know which one is right.
